The Republic of Latvia is an independent and sovereign state located in the North-East of Europe and is one of the three Baltic States on the Baltic Sea coast. Latvia borders with Estonia, Russia, Belarus and Lithuania. In 1991 Latvia restored its independence after a 50-year long period of occupation and incorporation in the Soviet Union. Since 2004, Latvia is a member state of NATO and the European Union.

Latvia lies in the very centre of the European continent and it is often called a bridge between the East and the West. The ethnic composition of the population has changed again and again over centuries, and Latvia has always been inhabited by people of various ethnic groups. Latvia is certainly a multi-national country.

With over 44 percent of its territory covered by forests, a vast network of free flowing rivers and thousands of lakes, Latvia is one of Europe’s best preserved havens for a wide variety of wildlife.
